Balthasar is mentioned in the papers of the Guild of the town of Gent (Belgium) from 1575-1579.
He moved to The Hague where he rented a place at the 'Binnenhof' (Inner Court) to sell his works, from 1587.

Father of his sons/painters: Balthasar II, Benjamin, Tobias en Willem.
His daughter Janneke was the wife of Jan Porcellis
His daughter Judith married Hendrik van Anthonissen.
