Girl with a Basket of Fruits (Lavinia) 1555-58
after Tiziano Vecellio (Titian)
Staatliche Museen, Berlin, Germany

Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio (c. 1488/1490 – 27 August 1576, better known as Titian) was an Italian painter, the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school.
He was born in Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno (in Veneto), in the Republic of Venice.
During his lifetime he was often called da Cadore, taken from the place of his birth.

This design is derived from Titian's Salome, dated to around 1550-1555, and now in the Prado, Madrid.
In the picture in Madrid it is the head of John the Baptist on the platter, whereas here and in other variants painted by Titian and his workshop, the figure carries fruits.
The fruit has often been taken to indicate that the subject was intended to represent the Roman nymph Pomona, although this is not certain.
The traditional idea that the girl depicted is Titian's daughter Lavinia, is probably apocryphal.
