Before opening his own workshop in Leiden, Rembrandt van Rijn (by some connaisseurs regarded as the greatest artist ever) took most of his lessons in Amsterdam. His first works are depicting biblical or philosophical scenes. He moves to Amsterdam in 1631-1632 where he received his first order to paint a portrait. It's this group portrait, Dr. Tulip's anatomical lesson, that made him famous. Without pity, the dissection of a human body is represented. The composition is cleverly illuminated and gains power by the captivation of the group of notables, of which each person is shown in his individuality. The work with which he reached the summit of this very profitable period of his career, was 'The Night Round', a collective portrait of a defense company of Amsterdam.
Rembrandt's prosperity started to decline in 1642. He received less orders for portraits and he encountered severe financial problems which ended in his bankruptcy, in 1656. In the last years of his life, he restarts working on biblical themes. His numeraous autoportraits, painted at all parts of his carreer, allow us to retrace his life analytically. He possessed the art to capture the exterior aspect of his subjets with displaying as much of the interior of their character. And it's this understanding of the human nature, that makes his works so unique.(AZ)
